About Rubicon

Rubicon Ranch is a safe space for people and animals to find sanctuary, peace, and connection together.

Borne out of a lifelong passion for animals and their protection, Rubicon Ranch Sanctuary was officially founded in 2023, although it has existed in spirit for nearly thirty years.

Located east of Edmonton, Alberta, the Sanctuary consists of over 60 acres for our residents to roam, including about 40 acres of grazable pastureland.

Our vision is to provide a safe, comfortable, and respectful home for all who live here. At Rubicon Ranch, our residents are partners and friends, not property or pets. We are all equals and we care for each other however we can.

As our number of residents has grown, so too has our awareness of the need for greater education, legal and regulatory changes, and safe spaces like this for our animal friends.

Animals are abused, disregarded, and discarded all over the world, and we work to reduce those ill effects by partnering with various rescues and other like-minded people to do what we can to minimize the damage that is done by those who don’t or won’t understand that these are autonomous, aware, and loving beings deserving of our respect and care.

Raising awareness and providing experiential learning is how we intend on being part of the solution and reducing the suffering of animals.

“Canada - and in particular Alberta - is one of the world’s biggest suppliers of horses for meat. More than 25,000 are slaughtered annually. The meat is frozen and exported, mainly to Japan, France and the U.S.” CTV.News

FAQs

  • Rubicon is a boundary line, one that when crossed, commits a person irrevocably. We named our sacred space Rubicon Ranch Sanctuary because we want the animals we invite to be residents here to know they have found their forever home and there’s no going back. We have committed to their care and wellbeing for their entire lives.

  • We reside on a rural property close to Edmonton, AB.

  • No, we currently don’t allow the general public to visit our property. It is attached to a private residence and visits are by invitation only. However, from time to time we host events and invite community members to visit our sacred space and meet the residents. In the future we hope to offer equine supported learning retreats.

  • Today we currently care for Horses, Donkeys, Dogs and Cats. In the past we have been a home for Goats and Sheep. In the future, time and resources permitting, we would love to welcome other animals needing sanctuary. The primary consideration is if we can offer a home that ensures they would be safe, happy, and cared for in the best way possible.
